Strike by Resident Doctors Intensifies Pay Dispute in England
The strike action, which represents the 15th instance of such labor unrest, commenced at 7 am local time (0600GMT) and is scheduled to last until 7 am on Monday, April 13. The continued series of strikes highlights the ongoing tension and lack of resolution between healthcare workers and authorities.
The British Medical Association (BMA) announced last month that its Resident Doctors Committee declined the most recent proposal from Health Secretary Wes Streeting, which suggested a 3.5% salary increase, following several weeks of discussions. The rejection indicates dissatisfaction with the terms presented and signals a demand for more substantial improvements.
In a statement issued on April 1, the organization emphasized that the government still has an opportunity to prevent the strike by resuming discussions and presenting a “credible offer” concerning wages and working conditions. The association underscored the importance of meaningful negotiations to reach a fair agreement.
“We remain willing and available to re-enter negotiations, but we are not willing to risk locking in further pay erosion,” the BMA said. The group reiterated its openness to dialogue while expressing concern over diminishing real-term earnings.
The association further noted that the government altered its stance on salary matters at the final stage, leaving doctors with “no option but to make ourselves heard from the picket line.” This last-minute shift contributed significantly to the decision to proceed with strike action.
Meanwhile, National Health Service England advised patients not to postpone seeking medical assistance during the strike period, urging the public to continue accessing necessary healthcare services despite the disruption.
