Scottish Labour Leader Demands Starmer’s Immediate Resignation

(MENAFN) In an explosive challenge to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's authority, Scotland's top Labour Party official publicly demanded his immediate resignation Monday, declaring that national leadership "has to change."

Anas Sarwar, who leads Labour in Scotland, acknowledged the move "isn't easy, and it's not without pain," but emphasized his allegiance lies with "my country, Scotland."

Delivering a damning assessment of Downing Street's performance, Sarwar declared: "That's why the distraction needs to end. And the leadership in Downing Street has to change."

The Scottish politician warned that Westminster dysfunction threatens Labour's standing north of the border. "We cannot allow the failures at the heart of Downing Street to mean the failures continue here in Scotland, because the election is not without consequence for the lives of Scots," he said.

Sarwar catalogued mounting frustrations with Starmer's administration, stating: "The situation in Downing Street is not good enough. There have been too many mistakes. They promised they were going to be different, but too much has happened."

Despite recognizing some policy wins, Sarwar said they've been completely obscured by controversy: "Have there been good things? Of course there have (been) many of them, but no one knows them and no one can hear them because they're being drowned out."

Downing Street swiftly rejected resignation demands, asserting Starmer "has a clear 5-year mandate from British people and will continue delivering change."

Starmer is slated to address Labour MPs later Monday in a bid to consolidate party support as fallout intensifies over the Peter Mandelson scandal connected to fresh disclosures in files involving convicted sex offender Epstein.
